HISTORY AS THE IMMORTALS KNOW ITLittonia, and then to the lands of theGreat Bay, in search of adventure andopportunities. This trickle became asmall stream after AC 974, whenThyatian and Minrothaddan interestsreached Littonia, and began the processof opening that kingdom to the KnownWorld.Wishing to emulate Littonia’s apparentsuccess on his own terms, King KaarloTaavinen formally opened Kaarjala to theoutside world in AC 990, but little hasresulted thus far. The king’s detractorshave used this as proof that Kaarjala canstand alone; but others have pointed toominous political developments inNorwold, as well as strange activity inthe unsavory region of Tuonela, as signsthat Kaarjala may soon need theassistance of the outside world if it is tosurvive.Kaarjalan TimelineBC 3000: The Great Rain of Firedestroyed Old World settlements inwhat is now upper Norwold.BC 2400: The Saamari, a nomadicpeople of the tundra and taiga, settledKainuu in eastern Borea.BC 2000: The Saamari progressed toBronze Age technology. Those thatretained their nomadic lifestylesbecame the Vaarana.BC 1800: Ilmarinen discovered a systemof runic magic, with which he builtmany useful magic items. Ilmarinenpresented these items to the chiefs ofhis people.BC 1787: The beautiful Maiden ofPojaara enchanted Ilmarinen, and thecraftsman left for her secret realm.BC 1725: The Great Horde exited fromthe Borean Valley and enteredKainuu. The overwhelmed Saamariand Vaarana fled eastwards.BC 1696: The Saamari and Vaaranaestablished Isanmaa in the foothillsnorth of the modern Hill and Dale.BC 1390: Repairing a wagon broke theMaiden’s hold over Ilmarinen andreignited his passion for building andinventing. He located Isanmaa, thenbeset by humanoids, and lent hisskills to that realm’s defense.BC 1385: A lovelorn Ilmarinen createdthe Automaton, a golden golem in thelikeness of the Maiden of Pojaara, butgave it away to Isanmaa’s king.BC 1380: The craftsman sloughed offhis mortal form to embark upon apath to Immortality under Kagyar.BC 1050: While adventuring, the youngPrince Vainamoinen swooned for theMaiden of Pojaara.BC 1048: The Automaton, sent byIsanmaa’s king to rescue the prince,killed the Maiden and returned withVainamoinen.BC 1035: Humanoids attacked Isanmaa,and King Saku fell in battle. Thenewly-crowned Vainamoinen led thedefense.BC 1000: The Shonaks reached thenorthern shores of Norwold.BC 1029: Vainamoinen defeated thehumanoids through a combination ofbattle prowess, runic lore, and themagical devices of Ilmarinen. Hespent the remainder of his reigncleansing Isanmaa.BC 800: The Kingdom of Isanmaa wasat its peak, and humanoid tribes paidtribute to the Saamari kings.BC 572: The Borean Campaign endedwith the rout of Isanmaa’s army andthe death of Prince Aarne.BC 550: Humanoids tribes rose upagainst the Saamari and soweddissension within the realm.BC 500: Isanmaa’s power waned in theface of resurgent humanoid attacks.BC 400: Lovaara, a beautiful butresentful sorceress, was swayed bythe promises within her dark dreams.She developed additional powers andformed a fellowship.BC 390: Lovaara and her followersstaged a revolt in southern Isanmaa.BC 381: Isanmaa’s armies were alreadyembroiled in numerous border wars,and they were caught off guard whenLovaara’s followers staged a revoltwith the aid of humanoids. KingTuomo fell in battle soon afterwards.BC 375: Lovaara consolidated much ofIsanmaa into her own dark realm.She ignored the thousands of refugeesthat fled north with the help of theVaarana.BC 350: Lovaara attacked the remainingSaamari and Vaarana holdings in thenorth.BC 315: Ilmarinen was reborn into oneof the Vaarana clans as the greathunter, Lemminkainen. Lovaara’sreach crept steadily northwards.BC 285: Lemminkainen led theremnants of Isanmaa in a stealthycampaign to hinder Lovaara. Thecounter-attack killed many humanoidsand checked Lovaara’s advances.BC 277: Lemminkainen breachedLovaara’s citadel in a costly raid thatwounded the sorceress, stripped herof many of her powers, and put her toflight. The humanoids fell intoquarreling disarray.BC 275: The Automaton reappeared andcounseled Lemminkainen to lead theSaamari to a new home in the east.They stumbled into the hidden realmof Pojaara, but the Vaarana remainedbehind to protect their lands. Afterissuing prophetic orders, the hero andthe Automaton disappeared.BC 260: The Saamari interpreted thedestruction of Alinor as a sign and leftPojaara.8

Kaarjala, the nation ofthe Saamari, was formed as a result.BC 100: Ilmarinen appeared before theSaamari at Kaarja and presented themwith the Great Sampo. Amassive freeze throughout Norwoldperiodically overwhelmed the heatingof the Great Sampo. Shonak herdersleft for the western tundra, while frostgiants made annual forays into theAutuasmaa and beyond.AC 893: Shonak nomads returned toupper Norwold.AC 961: Deposits of bog iron werediscovered in the half-frozen swampsnear the village of Lovajärvi. Manypeople relocated to the region.AC 973: Lovajärvi was destroyed by asmall horde of undead originatingfrom deep within the swamps.
