EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThere are 77 individual chartered chapters of theU.S. Green Building Council. The Chapters AnnualReport is a compilation of a variety of programmatic,financial, and governance data related to chapterimpact and performance. The information providedin this report represents chapter activities in 2012based on self-reported data from the 2013 ChaptersAnnual Report survey. USGBC collects and analyzesthis data to understand general trends related to itschapters; identify how each chapter is performingrelated to mission, finances, and governance areas;and further refine its programs and resources forchapters to ensure that each is well-supported andperforming to its highest potential.ImpactAs one means of organizing chapters, theyhave been categorized according to size, based onannual operating budgets, membership size, andnumber of staff. Of the 77 chapters, 74% of chaptersare considered small, 16% are medium, and 10% arelarge. It is important to note that size does notnecessarily equate to impact or health; many smallchapters are considered healthier than some of themedium or large chapters and chapters of all sizesare making significant impacts in their markets.Below is an overall summary of chapter performanceby the numbers.Minimum Performance StandardsThe Chapter Minimum Performance Standardsare 21 general indicators of chapter health relatedto a variety of finanical, structural, and goverananceareas. Chapters that have met all 21 minimumperformance standards have made a positive steptowards ensuring their chapter’s overall health. In2012, 12% of chapters met all of the standards. Thenational average minimum performance score was82% (e.g., the chapter met 82% of the 21 criteria).The most common areas where chapters did notmeet standards are:1. For chapters with staff, they did not maintainor review an employee policy manual (32%did not meet)2. A 3rd party review of finances was notcompleted (45% did not meet)3.
