CHAPTERS ANNUAL REPORT ANALYSIS4.3 Emerging Professionals (EPs)A key part of maintaining and growing thechapters is the recruitment and retention ofEmerging Professionals. USGBC maintains anEmerging Professionals National Committee (EPNC)that guides and supports the efforts of chapters inengaging their EPs. Individually, 55 of 77 chaptersmaintain Emerging Professionals Committees whichis an increase (22%) over 45 committees existing in2011. The EP committees themselves have a totalof 402 EP committee members in 2012, dropping23% from 525 members reported in 2011. No reasoncould be found in the Annual Report report data forthe reduction in committee members so chaptersshould reach out to EPs directly who left thecommittee to understand why they left.In addition to supporting committees, 53%of chapters specifically engaged EmergingProfessionals (EPs) in 2012 through targetedprogramming, education and events. Chaptershosted 178 events that reached more than 4,300EPs (24 attendees per event on average). In 2011,events hosted by chapters reached 7,000 EPs andmore than 200 events were hosted (35 attendeesper event on average). Most likely chapters reducedexpenses in all areas, so the decline in EP events in2012 was a reflection of that overall trend. The EP community continues to be a crucialaudience to reach as we strive to build the nextgeneration of green building community leaders. In2012, USGBC committed to enrolling 5,000 EP bythe year 2015 and 587 EPs (12% of the goal) havebeen recruited to date as a result of the ambitiousEP recruitment campaign to bring new energy andvoices to our community in 2012. In addition, 21%of chapters now hold a dedicated Board Seat forEPs. Another 13% of chapters have EPs holdingboard seats won through general elections. In thecommittee leadership structure, 20% of chaptersreport having EPs as committee chairs. TheEmerging Professionals National Committee alsooversaw the completion of 11 model projects whichare now hosted in the EP Profile Library on Yammerthat can be replicated across chapters. Additionalinformation on the EPNC can be found in AppendixE.Although there were very bright spots in thechapter network for EPs, only 10 of 77 chaptersindicated that they have a formal EmergingProfessionals recruitment strategy that includestargets, schedule for completion, and evaluationof success. This will be a critical step for chaptersto take in 2013 to ensure the long-term success ofthe EP program. Chapters interested in growingor creating an Emerging Professionals program areencouraged to participate in USGBC’s EmergingProfessionals Priority Group for Chapters.2012 CHAPTERS ANNUAL REPORT | 40
