CHAPTERS ANNUAL REPORT ANALYSISLeadership4.1 VolunteersContributionVolunteers are vital to our movement. Everychapter, from the smallest to the largest, relies on theknowledge, skill, and passion of their volunteers toimplement their mission. The economic downturn,competition for time from other worthy causes, andvolunteer burn-out are all factors that need to beaddressed as we celebrate and support our existingvolunteers while recruiting and engaging newvoices and perspectives in implementing our vision.Volunteer development and support is a key area offocus of the Three Year Plan and USGBC will offerchapters a variety of support and tools in this regardin 2013 and beyond. Chapters interested in this areaare encouraged to participate in USGBC’s VolunteerPriority for Chapters.Chapter volunteers contributed approximately268,254 hours of work, valued at more than $5.9MMbased on the 2012 IRS volunteer hour valuation of$22.14 per hour. This represents a decrease over2011, when volunteers contributed 300,000 hours atan estimated value of $6.5MM. Chapter volunteerhours have declined for two straight years – froman average of 3,884 per chapter in 2010 to 3,781 in2011 and 3,484 in 2012. This should not be seen asa negative. With the increased focus on chaptercollaboration and communication, chapters are nowable to share best practices and resources. Thisenables a lot of tasks, usually done by volunteers, tobe streamlined throughout the network and refocusvolunteer efforts on impacting their community. Thechapter network had a small gain (2.5% increase)in 2012 for a total of 5,670 active volunteers. Theaverage volunteer remains active in the chapter forapproximately 2 years.Volunteer ManagementVolunteers are the backbone of any public benefitand charitable organization. Chapters have greatlyimproved their volunteer management processesby creating structure around their volunteer roles.Chapters still list volunteer recruitment and burnoutas a major challenge and also have set priorities in2013 to recruit and retain more volunteers. In order todo this effectively, chapters will need to implement aformal volunteer recruitment and retention program.Currently only 30% of the network indicates that aformal volunteer management program is in place. Ifa chapter is looking for guidance on how to establishor strengthen the volunteer management program,or needs sample volunteer job descriptions, pleaserefer to USGBC’s Volunteer Management Toolkit.Chapters should also designate a Volunteer Manager(staff or volunteer) to coordinate volunteer roles forthe chapter.
