This is one <strong>of</strong> two studies held at BMAG for the legs <strong>of</strong> the poets in The Seeds and Fruits<br />

<strong>of</strong> English Poetry. From the pose it is most likely to be for the legs <strong>of</strong> the poet Milton as<br />

he appears in the left wing <strong>of</strong> the Ashmolean study (Fig. 1).<br />

The hood is based on an illustration <strong>of</strong> the Count <strong>of</strong> Flanders in J. R. Planché's A<br />

Complete History <strong>of</strong> the Dress <strong>of</strong> the Inhabitants <strong>of</strong> the British Isles, published in 1834<br />

and reprinted in 1847 and 1874. Brown copied the hood and liripipe from Planché onto a<br />

sheet <strong>of</strong> tracing paper that is also in the <strong>Birmingham</strong> collection (cat. no. 59). Brown's<br />

diary entry for 25 September 1847 may<br />

well relate to this drawing: 'got up Early – & got<br />

to work<br />

late, fumbled till 12 o’clock over the Hood <strong>of</strong> the left hand corner figure <strong>of</strong> the<br />
