September 9-10, 2008 31351PROGRAM MODIFICATION – DOCTOR OF PHARMACY – HSCThe Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education changed its accreditationstandards and now requires all doctor of pharmacy programs to provide a minimum of 300 hoursof introductory pharmacy practice experiences in the first three professional years. After athorough review of all professional coursework by college faculty, students, and practitioners inthe field, the College of Pharmacy proposes several changes to its professional program, whichwill accommodate the new accreditation standards. These changes will go into effect with thefall 2009 entering class.Currently, the PharmD program provides 160 hours of pharmacy practice experienceduring the first two years (80 hours each in the P-1 and P-2 years). The faculty haverecommended altering the pharmacy practice courses in the P-2 and P-3 year to accommodatethis new accreditation standard. Specifically one credit hour of work has been added in the P-2year (equivalent to an additional 40 hours of practical experience) and two credit hours havebeen added the P-3 year (equivalent to an additional 80 hours of practical experience). Theseadditional 120 hours of practice experience plus the current 160 hours of practice along withcredit allowed by ACPE for student self-reflection and discussion about these introductoryprofessional practice experiences over the first three professional years will allow the college tomeet the new accreditation standard. A chart listing the curriculum requirements is attachedhereto as Exhibit H.Other proposed changes to the PharmD program include the changing of coursenames to reflect contemporary descriptions and the professional content of these courses and there-alignment of courses, which allows the college to facilitate student learning and to improveefficiencies of delivering the curriculum.President Boren recommended the Board of Regents approve a curriculummodification for the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree within the College of Pharmacy at the HealthSciences Center.Regent Wade moved approval of the recommendation.
