The program provides opportunities for participants tosucceed in pre-university performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. UpwardBound serves high school students preparing to enter postsecondary education who come fromlow-income families or from families in which nei<strong>the</strong>r parent holds a bachelors degree. The goal<strong>of</strong> Upward Bound is to increase <strong>the</strong> rates at which participants enroll in and graduate frominstitutions <strong>of</strong> postsecondary education. All Upward Bound projects must provide instruction inmath, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language.Program services include:• Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and o<strong>the</strong>r subjects necessary forsuccess in education beyond high school• Academic, financial or personal counseling• Exposure to academic programs and cultural events• Tutorial services• Mentoring programs• Information on postsecondary education opportunities• Assistance in completing university entrance and financial aid applications• Assistance in preparing for university entrance exams• Work study positions to expose participants to careers requiring a postsecondarydegreeTalent Search/Open Doors:Grantor:U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> EducationAward Period: 09/01/08-08/31/09 $ 344,914Performance period: 09/01/07-08/31/11 $ 1,379,656Remainder: 09/01/09-08/31/11 $ 689,828Program Purpose: The Talent Search/Open Doors program identifies and assists individualsfrom disadvantaged backgrounds who have <strong>the</strong> potential to succeed in higher education. Theprogram provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages<strong>the</strong>m to graduate from high school and continue on to <strong>the</strong> postsecondary school <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir choice.Talent Search also serves high school dropouts by encouraging <strong>the</strong>m to re-enter <strong>the</strong> educationalsystem and complete <strong>the</strong>ir education. The goal <strong>of</strong> Talent Search is to increase <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong>youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in <strong>the</strong>postsecondary education institution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir choice.
