The Food Security Atlas of Rural Maharashtra is one of aseries of eight Atlases produced by the Institute for HumanDevelopment (IHD) and the UN World Food Programme(WFP). The other states covered in this series are: Jharkhand,Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Bihar andUttar Pradesh. The Atlases carry out a district-level analysis offood security for each of these states.The purpose of the Atlas is to identify regions and districtswithin the state that require priority attention in order toimprove their food security status. This is followed by anidentification of the characteristics that differentiate thebetter-off from the worse-off districts. These characteristicsof food insecure regions and districts are used to put forwarda set of recommended interventions that could be expectedto improve food security.It is hoped that the Atlas will stimulate further analysis, actionand advocacy for reducing the incidence of hunger.The UN World Food Programme (WFP)2 Poorvi Marg, Vasant ViharNew Delhi 110057www.wfp.org
