household. The women in our sub-city are disadvantaged in almost all aspects of
their lives. They have limited access to schooling, employment and other social
services. Most women in our sub-city are exposed to time consuming hard labor to
fulfill her responsibility as mother and wife. Their situation becomes worse as a
result of the death of the husband which will make her to lead the livelihood of
herself and her dependents single-handedly.”
One other respondent also commented “I live in kirkos sub-city. Kirkos is one of
the densely populated sub-cities in Addis Ababa. This Kebele is full of dilapidated
houses, and lacks appropriate sanitation facilities such as latrine, waste disposal
mechanisms that includes sewerage systems. Inaccessibility of potable water at
household level contributes to poor environmental sanitation. The majority of
households in Kebele are unemployed and the others are low-income and rely on
petty trades and other informal activities to earn a living. They mainly depend on
pity trading and a remarkable number of the female population engaged in
commercial sex work. The majority of the women engaged in prostitutions came
from the rural parts of the country and these women are exacerbating the social
problems that we already have in our sub city. The Dewel radio program that we
heard now partly explains the reality in kirkos sub city”.
Another woman said that she is a petty trader and she knew a lady who sits beside
her. The lady gave birth last time and didn’t go the clinic even once. Then this
woman said she told her the importance of going to the hospital for treatment after
listening to “Dewel” radio program. Another respondent said that he has learnt a
lot about mother and child care. He said that this is directly related to their day to
day life, since there are families everywhere.
Discussants also mentioned programs dealing with the growth of population
contributing to environment degradation. One elderly discussant said that people
at his age can now understand how the fast growth of population has impacted on
