By cutting down livestock <strong>and</strong> replacing its products by low-carbon alternatives that offer<br />
similar taste <strong>and</strong> are healthier, governments could "kill two birds with one stone": reducing GHG<br />
emissions <strong>and</strong> providing healthier food sources to its population.<br />
These alternatives are meat <strong>and</strong> dairy analogs based on soy, seitan, rice, etc. These analogs are<br />
less expensive, less wasteful, easier to cook, <strong>and</strong> healthier than livestock products.<br />
<strong>Food</strong> security would be improved because arable l<strong>and</strong>s used <strong>for</strong> livestock could be used <strong>for</strong><br />
legumes, cereals <strong>and</strong> grains. Most developing countries (vulnerable to CC) have soy, wheat or<br />
rice in abundant quantities on <strong>the</strong>ir soil so <strong>the</strong>y would be less dependent on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />
Since processing would be easier <strong>and</strong> shorter than <strong>for</strong> livestock products, prices would be lower,<br />
which would fur<strong>the</strong>r improve access of poor populations to food <strong>and</strong> overall nutritious needs<br />
would be satisfied.<br />
Many recent reports, including from <strong>the</strong> UN, have urged a change in our current diets to feed a<br />
growing population, towards fewer livestock products. This article sums it up:<br />

When devising your plans <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee on World <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Security</strong> CFS, I hope <strong>the</strong> panel HLPE<br />
will include this solution. This is a triple-win action, providing (i) poverty alleviation, (ii) greater<br />
food security <strong>and</strong> nutrition <strong>and</strong> (iii) CC mitigation <strong>and</strong> adaptation efficient tools.<br />

I would recommend making an addition to <strong>the</strong> scope of work of <strong>the</strong> HLPE.<br />
I would make explicit <strong>the</strong> task of looking at what is already being done in some areas to deal<br />
with <strong>the</strong> effects of climate change on food security <strong>and</strong> assessing <strong>the</strong>ir replicability, i.e.<br />
identifying what it would take politically, socially, financially, <strong>and</strong> in terms of institutional<br />
development to replicate <strong>the</strong>se types of interventions in o<strong>the</strong>r areas.<br />

The topic on climate change <strong>and</strong> food security comes at <strong>the</strong> most opportune time when <strong>the</strong><br />
World is seeking <strong>for</strong> tangible answers to this global socio-economic ana<strong>the</strong>ma. I have promptly<br />
responded to this topic because incidentally I recently witnessed a sad situation where 14<br />
people were buried in a l<strong>and</strong>slide in <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Province of Rw<strong>and</strong>a due to excessive rains. It<br />
is clear that <strong>the</strong> amount of rain being received in this region has dramatically increased over <strong>the</strong><br />
years.<br />
