Sprocket TechnicalSectionChain Saver SprocketsHunting Tooth (Double-Duty) Chain Saver SprocketsThe special flange construction on the rim of Chain SaverSprockets extends the life of the chain. Chain sidebars rest onthe flange as the chain wraps around the sprocket. This keepsthe chain on the true pitch line and distributes wear over agreater contact area.Hunting Tooth Chain Saver Sprockets combine the specialconstruction of Hunting Tooth Sprockets with Chain SaverSprockets for super long wear. The chain engages one set ofteeth with each rotation, and the special flange constructionadds extra support, keeping the chain on true pitch anddistributing wear over a greater contact area.Hunting Tooth (Double-Duty) SprocketsSprocketsThe special construction of Hunting Tooth Sprockets makesthem last twice as long as regular sprockets. Hunting ToothSprockets have an odd number of teeth and are half the pitchof the chain. Every time the sprocket makes a revolution, thechain engages with one set of teeth, ahead of the previouslyengaged set. Each tooth makes contact with the chain only halfas many times as it would on a regular sprocket, extending theuseful life of the sprocket two times that of regular sprockets.E-212
Sprocket TechnicalSectionOther FactorsWhen ordering sprockets, there are some additional factorsto consider.Hub LengthStandard hub lengths are shown in the Sprocket Tables in thiscatalogue. Longer or shorter hubs are available on a made-toorderbasis.Overload Protection - Shock RelayThe Shock Relay is an “Electronic Shear Pin Hub.” Set theoverload protection you want for your operation, and thissensitive electronic monitor stops the line before damagecan occur. After the problem is corrected, the Shock Relaycan be reset at the touch of a button, increasing efficiencyand reducing downtime. Refer to section F of the catalogue formore information.Step 1: Calculate Pitch DiameterTo obtain the pitch diameter of a sprocket, multiply the constant(Table 5) by the chain pitch.Step 2: Select Hub ClassUsing the quick selector chart (Table 7), plot the pitch diameterof the sprocket obtained in Step 1. Then plot the working loadof the chain, suggested hub selection is found at the point ofintersection.Step 3: Determine Length & Diameter of HubUsing the information obtained in Step 2, plot the hub class onTable 8. Then plot the bore of the wheel. The point ofintersection indicates the diameter of the hub. Length Thru-Bore (LTB) is found at the bottom of the appropriate hubdiameter column. Where the bore size is not know, refer to theshaft selection procedure in the Roller Chain Section of thiscatalogue.Traction WheelsTraction Wheels are available in a wide range of sizes andtypes to fit most chains. They are usually used as drivers only.They are not generally used at the tail shaft or boot.Selection of Chain and SprocketsFor full drive-train selection guidelines, refer to the separatesection on Roller Chain Selection.The smallest applicable pitch of roller chain is desirable for quietoperation and high speed. The horsepower capacity varies withthe chain pitch. A short pitch with a high working load can oftenbe obtained through the use of multi-strand chains. The use ofmulti-strand Engineering Class chain is extremely rare.Select the small sprocket in the drive system first. This sprocketmust be large enough to accommodate the shaft. Afterselecting the small sprocket, the number of teeth on the largesprocket is determined by the desired ratio of the shaft speeds.See the Speed Ratio Chart – Table 6. Over-emphasis on theexactness in the speed ratio can result in a cumbersome,impractical, and expensive installation. In most cases,satisfactory operation can be obtained with a minor change inspeed of one or both shafts. The recommended maximumspeed ratio is 7:1, although higher ratios can be used.SprocketsAs a general rule, the driving sprocket should be a minimum of17 teeth, although small sprockets may be used. When themaximum bore of the 17 tooth sprocket (ie. the minimumrecommended size) will not accommodate the shaft, it isnecessary to select a larger sprocket.E-213
