Western <strong>Washington</strong> Growth Management Hearings BoardSettling disputes early saves $27,000Growth management disputes usually settled through costly hearings be<strong>for</strong>e theBoard. Among the expenses <strong>for</strong> these hearings are travel, research, courtreporting, mailing, telephone, printing, attorney fees and appeal certificationcosts.An alternative dispute resolution project was launched. Now a settlementconference officer facilitates negotiations between disputing parties andattempts to resolve the issues early in the process. In many cases, the issuesare resolved and a hearing is not needed.<strong>Results</strong>★ The Board saves about $3,000 per case in printing and travel costs.
