Water Resources Development Criteria/<strong>Standards</strong> Manual Chapter 3UNIT <strong>III</strong> – <strong>Sanitary</strong> <strong>Sewer</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Standards</strong>Public <strong>Sewer</strong>sconstruction methods shall be specified. In these special circumstances, calculationsaddressing both live and dead loads shall be submitted to Water Resources for review.All loading requirements must be taken into account when considering material selectionand installation methods.f. <strong>Sewer</strong>s sixty inches (60”) in diameter and larger shall be designed using the “D” loadingmethod as specified in the latest edition <strong>of</strong> the “Concrete <strong>Design</strong> Manual” published bythe American Concrete Pipe Association. The “D” load design shall be limited toincrements <strong>of</strong> 200 feet or more and shall not vary between manholes unless permission isgranted from Water Resources. The “D” load design shall be based on a trench widthapproved by Water Resource prior to design.3.11 Manholes3.11.1 GeneralNo sewer laterals or building sewer connections shall be allowed to be connected directlyto a manhole structure.3.11.2 Manhole LocationsManholes shall be located at the following locations:• Changes in sewer grades or alignment.• <strong>Sewer</strong> junctions.• Pipe diameter changes.• Material changes.• Where spacing requirements justify placement.3.11.3 Manhole SpacingManholes shall be placed at the following intervals:Maximum DistancePipe Diameter Between Manholes8” to 15” 400’18” to 30” 500’33” and greater 600’Under special circumstances, manhole spacing may be increased. Water Resources willreview such instances on a case-by-case basis.3.11.4 Manhole DiameterThe following table provides general criteria for the maximum pipe size that can connectto a specific diameter manhole structure. The designer shall use this table as a guideline.Existing conditions may dictate variance.
