Bilingual/ELL Language Arts 9 (<strong>Course</strong>s #3050 ‐ South only)This course closely parallels the regular English 9 program with strategies to foster the development <strong>of</strong>English for English Language Learners. (By Bilingual department recommendation)Bilingual Government (<strong>Course</strong> #3052 ‐ South only)This capstone senior Social Studies class looks at the structure and function <strong>of</strong> the federal, state and locallevels <strong>of</strong> government in the United Stated. Much attention is given to the role <strong>of</strong> political parties and thepress as well as the election process and issues <strong>of</strong> the day.Bilingual Math Skills (<strong>Course</strong> #3020 ‐ South only)This course is designed to build basic math skills. The smaller class size allows for increasedindividualization <strong>of</strong> instruction. Students who are capable and motivated have the opportunity to developpre‐algebra skills in preparation for Algebra I.English as A Second Language ‐ Beginning I (<strong>Course</strong> #3054)This course has been designed to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the non‐English speaking student. The course givesthe student a working knowledge in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasisis to develop initial survival skills in the English language, as well as an introduction to American culture.This class meets two periods per day.English as A Second Language ‐ Beginning II (<strong>Course</strong> #3056)This course is an extension <strong>of</strong> English as A Second Language 1 (#3022). The course continues to build uponthe student's prior listening comprehension and speaking skills in English. Additionally, this course giveheavy emphasis to expanding the reading and writing skills. This class meets two periods per day.English as A Second Language ‐ Intermediate (<strong>Course</strong> #3024)The intermediate ESL class is a continuation <strong>of</strong> the beginner level ESL courses and is designed to supportand advance the skills developed in courses 3022 and 3023. This class focuses on advancing students'reading and writing skills, which include reading short novels and writing essays. Other topics <strong>of</strong> studyinclude further development <strong>of</strong> grammar and further development <strong>of</strong> conversational skills.English as A Second Language ‐ Advanced (<strong>Course</strong> #3026)The last in the series <strong>of</strong> ESL classes, the advanced course concentrates on reading comprehension, oraldiscussion, and critical and creative writing. Topics include: American literature, short stories, sciencefiction, mythology, critical listening and speech. After the course completion, the student is ready forgrade level English classes.21
