Environmental Science II (Course #1308)Lab Fee: $8.00The second semester of Environmental Science will investigate environmental problems and solutions withdiscussions framed by science principles. Case studies, investigations, simulations, independent research, and discussions will help to illustrate interactions between science, technology, and social and politicalinstitutions.PHYSICAL SCIENCE COURSES …Earth and Space Science (Course #1310)Lab Fee: $8.00Earth and Space Science is a year‐long laboratory science course intended for both college bound and noncollegebound students. Earth and Space Science is designed to give students a broad backgroundintroduction to the fields of geology, astronomy and meteorology, as well as assistance in becoming amore scientifically aware citizen. Successful completion of Earth and Space Science counts as one credittowards the district's three credit graduation requirement in science and allows the student access to allsecond year science courses during their high school years.Chemistry I (Course #1320)Lab Fee: $8.00This course studies matter and the physical and chemical changes it undergoes and includes appropriatelaboratory work to compliment the topics being studied. Chemistry I emphasizes atomic structure, periodic table development, formula writing, equation balancing, gas laws, solutions, and acid/baserelationships. In addition, there is also some emphasis on science, technology, and societyinterrelationships as all citizens have an obligation to become better informed when it comes to makingdecisions on factors that affect the quality of their lives. This course is recommended for all college boundstudents and is especially recommended for those planning careers in medicine or other science fields.Students must have passed Algebra I or Algebra I‐B with a C or better. Before selecting this course, thestudent must have successfully completed Biology or be concurrently enrolled in a Biology course.Organic Chemistry (Course #1321)Lab fee: $10.00This semester course provides a survey of organic chemistry. Students will be exposed to advanced topicsin chemistry that they would find in college level chemistry. This survey course includes the study of thecompounds and reactions of the alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, alcohols, ethers, aldehdes, ketones, acids and esters. Before selecting this course the student must have successfully completed Biology,Chemistry I, and Physics I (concurrent enrollment in Physics I is acceptable).AP Chemistry (Course #1322)Lab Fee: To be determinedAP Chemistry is a fast paced college‐level course designed to take the place of freshman inorganic chemistry.Students are challenged to be responsible for their own learning, acquire a solid foundation in inorganic chemistry, strengthen quantitative reasoning and problem‐solving skills, and develop lab skills equivalent to those of collegefreshmen. The topics presented in this course: atoms, molecules, and ions, stoichiometry, types of chemicalreactions, properties of solutions, gases, atomic structure and periodicity, bonding concepts, thermodynamics, rateof reaction, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, equilibria in acid‐base solutions, spontaneity of reaction andelectrochemistry are treated in depth.54
