INDEPENDENT STUDY OPTIONS PROGRAM (ISO) (<strong>Course</strong> #1032)Students may pursue independent study beyond the regular curriculum. Students, in consultation withtheir counselor, may arrange a contract with a teacher who will serve as a supervising sponsor. The facultysponsor will assist the student in drafting a project description. The project for independent study must beapproved by the parents, the administration and the department chairperson for the department inwhich the project will be submitted for credit. Any students in grades 9‐12 are eligible to sign up for theIndependent Study Options program. Procedures, requirements and application forms may be obtainedfrom the counselors’ or principals’ <strong>of</strong>fice.YEARBOOK – LEGACY (<strong>Course</strong> #1040) – WHS onlyInitial planning begins in the spring <strong>of</strong> the year. Themes, endsheets, and cover sheets are discussed. Aneditor and assistant editor may attend a summer workshop. Assignments are directly related to theproduction <strong>of</strong> the book and include: writing copy, writing headlines, fitting copy,cropping pictures, and all facets <strong>of</strong> preparing material for production. Publisher deadlines must be met.Hard work and enthusiasm are required. A limited enrollment will be adhered to. Consent <strong>of</strong> advisorrequired.YEARBOOK ‐ MEGAPHONE (<strong>Course</strong> #1042) – SHS onlySouth's yearbook is a year‐long course that readies a major studentdriven desktop publication forproduction. Students learn how to: create layouts through the Pagemaker program; use a camera anddarkroom; write feature and sports copy; scan photos onto a page layout and create special effects.Themes are developed and integrated into the entire publication process. Team work, communicationskills, responsibility, dedication and hard work provide an environment where personal growth occurscreating an atmosphere where deadlines are met teaching real life skills needed in the world <strong>of</strong> work.YEARBOOK ‐ NORTHERN LIGHT (<strong>Course</strong> 1044) – NHS onlyInitial planning begins approximately March 1st <strong>of</strong> the year before the book is delivered. The staff meetsoutside <strong>of</strong> regular school hours to develop theme, endsheets and cover. The editor and assistant editorattend a summer workshop to further develop the chosen themes. The class meets one hour a day duringregular school hours to plan and create layout, photographs, copy, special effects, etc. Four publisherdeadlines must be met with a stated number <strong>of</strong> completed pages to insure prompt delivery in June. Hardwork and enthusiasm are the only pre‐requisites.NEWSPAPER (<strong>Course</strong> #1046)This year‐long course will be responsible for producing the school newspaper on a regular basis. The paperprovides practical experience for writers (news features, sports, editorial), artists (illustrations, drawings,cartoons) and editors (editing, layouts, make up, and headline writing). Class activities will includeinterviewing, reporting, make up, layout and editing with an emphasis on writing skills. Students will beexpected to write with accuracy, clarity, conciseness, and correctness. Students wishing to continue towork on the newspaper for a second or third year will use the independent study option process.72
