Table 3.4 shows data on the cumulative fertility (number of children ever born) to evermarriedwomen by age at first marriage and duration since first marriage. Among all ever-marriedwomen, the mean number of children ever born is one for women married 0-4 years and increases to 6.7for women married 20-24 years. Among women first married between the ages of 15 and 25, differencesin childbearing performance are minimal and the number of children ever bom by marriage duration areabout the same as for all women. Among these women, the number of children ever born at durations 25-29 and 30+ years increases to seven and eight, although the relationship between age at first marriage andchildren ever bern is inconsistent for longer unions. Among women first marrying under age 15 or at age25 and above, childbearing performance differs from that of all ever-married women. Women marryingunder age 15 have fewer children at all durations of marriage than all ever-married women. On the otherhand, women marrying at age 25 and above have more children ever born at durations 0-4 and 5-9 andabout the same number of children ever born at durations 15-19 and 20-24 as all ever-married women. Itappears that the relatively high fertility of these women immediately following marriage is compensatedfor by lower than average fertility at subsequent durations so that, at durations 15-24 years, theircumulative childbearing performance is about the same as for all ever-married women.
