4.7 Intention to Use Contraception in the FutureWomen who were not using a contraceptive method at the time of the ODHS interview wereasked if they thought that they would do something to keep from getting pregnant at any time in thefuture. Those who answered affirmatively, were asked which method they preferred to use and whetherthey intended to use in the next twelve months or not.Table 4.13 shows that 32 percent of currently married nonusers intend m use at some time in thefuture, 53 percent do not intend to use, and 15 percent are unsure. Of those who intend to use, themajority said that they thought that they would not use within the next 12 months. The proportion ofmarried nonusers who say they intend to use in the future does not vary much according to the number ofchildren a woman has, however, of those who say they plan to use, the proportion who say they intend touse in the next 12 months increases as the number of children increases.Table 4.13Percent Distribution of Currently Married Nonusers byIntention to Use in the Future, According to Numberof Living Children, ODHS, 1986Number of Living Children *Intention toUse in Future 0 1 2 3 4+ TotalUse in Next 12 Months 3.4 3.3 2.8 6.9 I2.2 8.5Use Later 32.0 25.I 30.4 21.6 16.9 21.3Use, Unsure When 0.6 0.8 0.9 2.6 3.2 2.3Unsure if Will Use 17.7 18.2 16.8 17.9 13.3 15.3Does Not Intend to Use 46.3 52.5 49.1 50.9 54.5 52.5Total i00.0 100.0 i00.0 I00.0 i00.0 i00.0Number of Women 175 362 316 379 1425 2659* Includes current pregnancy40
