Women who had heard of methods were also asked where they would go to get the method ifthey wanted to use it. By far the most common response was a government hospital (Table 4.4), wherehalf to three-quarters of women knowing a modem method said they would go to obtain the method.Government health centers and private doctors were also cited frequently as sources for most modemmethods, while pharmacies and shops were mentioned as sources for the pill and condom. In order to getinformation about using periodic abstinence, the majority knowing the method said they would go to agovernment hospital (36 percent), to a private doctor (15 percent), or to nowhere at all (26 percent). It isinteresting to note that almost all women who have heard of a method also know a place to obtain it--generally, only five percent or less said they didn't know where to go to get the method.Table 4.4Percent Distribution of Women Aged 15-49 Knowing a Contraceptive Method by SourceWhere They Would Obtain the Method, ODHS, 1986Contraceptive MethodDiaphragm, Female Male PeriodicInJec- Foam, Sterlli- Sterlli- Absti-Source Pill IUD tion Jelly Condom zation zatlon noncePrivate Doctor 4.7 5.4 4.9 5.0 3.5 6.9 9.9 14.5Govt. Asshown in Table 4.5, only 15 percent of all women and 13 percent of married women in Ondo State haveever used a contraceptive method. The pill (6 percent), periodic abstinence (5 percent), and condom (4percent) are the methods used most commonly. Withdrawal has been used by 3 percent, injection by 2percent, the IUD by 1 percent, and vaginal methods and sterilization by less than one percent of allwomen. For most methods, ever use is highest among women in their 20s. It is lower among marriedwomen than all women, however, the pattern by age and method is similar for both groups.30
