Their medium reinvents itself too quickly for false oppositionsbetween creative types and programmers. They have become something else, some new fusion of artist and engineer -- interfacers, cyberpunks, Web masters-- charged with the epic task of representing our digital machines, making senseof information in its raw form." 2- Steven Johnson, author and columnist. From his book Interface Culture: HowNew Technology Transforms the Way We Create and CommunicateInterface design is a broad term for the study of the design of interfacesfor various applications such as web sites, DVD’s, games, mobile devices, and interactive kiosks, to name a few.Designing interfaces requires knowledge inmultiple disciplines including art, design, graphicdesign, communications, computer science, information science, information technology, andpsychology, to name a few. As a two yearAssociate of Science degree program, the KCCNew Media Arts interface design curriculum isprimarily focused on web design, or the design ofweb sites.Within interface design, there are manyfacets, technologies, and sub-domains. In termsof industry positions available, there are twoopposite sides of the job spectrum: web“designer” and web “developer.” A web designeris typically a right-brained visual designercapable of creating graphics and layouts. On theopposite side of the spectrum is a left-brainedweb developer, typically a programmerresponsible for setting up the server andtechnical functionality of a web site. The NMAinterface design curriculum is unique in that it isdesigned to cater toward both, but with moreweight on visual web design. This field requires acombination of both visual and technical skills. Please refer to the left hand side of the graphicbelow for more detail on some industry-specifictopics and technologies that I teach within theinterface design curriculum.Introduction section page 10
