PRESENTATION: LESOTHO AND HAWAII! Brief Description: On Friday, May 1 st , 2009 I gave a T.H.I.N.K. (The Hidden Intellectual Network atKapi’olani) presentation entitled, “Hawaii and Lesotho: Numbers from the Other Side of the Globe.”I talked about my trip to Lesotho Africa during the summer of 2008 where my wife worked at aPediatric HIV clinic. As part of the experience I learned a lot about the HIV/AIDS epidemic andshared this information with my colleagues. Please see the T.H.I.N.K. Lesotho section of theappendix for the presentation.Slides from my T.H.I.N.K. Presentation! Significance: This was a great opportunity to share my stories and adventures with my colleagues. At the meeting I met Jim Metz, Associate Professor here at KCC, and learned that he travels toSouth Africa every summer for a teacher training event. We also spoke about collaborating on afew ideas that he has for digitizing a game that he has designed.E|PORTFOLIO (ASSIGNED TIME)! Brief Description: In the spring of 2006, I was given assigned time to act as a design consultant forthe e|portfolio committee. My primary responsibility was to redesign the skin, or look and feel, of theopen source software application that KCC purchased as a learning and assessment tool forfaculty and students. My proposed objectives were as follows:! To establish a visual identity for the e|portfolio interface.! To analyze the source code of the OSP (Open Source Portfolio) software.! To recode the default CSS (cascading style sheets) provided by the software developers.! To design and build a static web site that would act as the central gateway to the software(http://eportfolio.kcc.hawaii.edu).! To test the software as a user.I worked with the e|portfolio committee members to learn about their desired color scheme andtheir thoughts and goals for a layout that would best serve the user population: KCC faculty andstudents. In order to start redesigning the visual layout, I first had to figure out the technicalboundaries within which I could work in order to manipulate the visual templates. This requiredlong hours spent researching, analyzing, and parsing through many pages of the developer’ssource code line by line.Service section page 71
