The quality of work isconsistently the highest in all of the six classesthat I teach. One reason for why strong work isalways produced in this course is because theschedule is designed in such a way that studentshave plenty of time to go through the full designprocess by focusing their energy on one largeproject for the full duration of the semesterinstead of on a series of small projects. I provideincremental deadlines throughout the semesteras milestones to keep them on pace. Thisstructure helps to teach them how goodplanning, organization, and management skillscan improve the workflow, production, andoverall quality of a product. After realizing this, Iapplied this technique to several of my othercourses, specifically Art 257 Motion GraphicDesign and Art 222 <strong>Digital</strong> Multimedia.Every year, all of the students seem pleasedwith their final designs and choose to includetheir work within their personal portfolios. chrisgargiulo1 2 3 4 5IntroductionBrief Summary & BioTeachingMy Primary ResponsibilityProf. DevelopmentLifelong LearningServiceGoing Above & BeyondLeadershipTaking InitiativeART 257 – MOTION GRAPHIC DESIGNMotion Graphic Design is a studio course introducing 2D animation andtime-based media.The major student outcomes are learninghow to: 1) design for time-based visual projectsvia writing and storyboarding; 2) incorporatebasic design elements of line, shape, color,typography, etc. into time-based animations; 3)incorporate basic animation techniques such assquash and stretch into their designs; and 4)build interactive web-based user interfaces thatutilize motion graphics.I use a variety of teaching techniques to meetthe course objectives, primarily consisting ofbeginning each class looking at severalanimations, short films, music videos, and flashweb sites. I then conduct a series of technicallessons on how to use Adobe Flash to executetheir visual ideas. To ensure that studentsunderstand the significance of the lessons, I holdperiodic studio art critiques after eachassignment is completed and place an emphasison assessing their animations by looking at theirgeneral sense of timing.This class is a lot of fun. The students enjoylearning how to animate and create motiongraphics for a variety of contexts, including flashweb sites. This course was originally designed tobe taken as a co-requisite with Art 258 Interfaceprogramming 2, where students learnActionScript, Adobe Flash’s internal scriptinglanguage. As a co-requisite, one of the helpfulbenefits is teaching two courses with the exactsame class roster. However, I soon discoveredthat teaching both classes to the same studentsis both an advantage and a disadvantage.One advantage is that I could easily adjust thecourse schedules to stagger and balanceassignment deadlines. These subtle changeshelped students to manage their workload.Another advantage was that I was able tocombine the final project for both Art 257 and Art258 into one large project so that students areable to focus on one high quality project thatincorporates the concepts from both classes intoone, as opposed to two smaller projects with littleor no integration. The disadvantage to thisapproach, that I eventually discovered afterteaching this course a few times, is that studentstypically did not spend an equal amount of timedoing motion graphics as they did programming.Learning from these experiences, I ultimatelydecided that it is best not to combine the finalprojects. I modified the course assignmentschedule so that there is now an independentmotion graphics final project with a longertimeframe for students to complete the full designprocess. This approach increases the quality ofwork and allows for students to learn more aboutmotion graphics and in much greater depth.Teaching section page 34
