Students are able to go to mycourse web pages and watch (or re-watch) them at home whenever they want. Note the timeline on the bottom where students canstop and play the video lesson and view it at their own pace. If they open up multiple windows they can work on executing the tutorialat the same time as watching it. chrisgargiulo1 2 3 4 5IntroductionBrief Summary & BioTeachingMy Primary ResponsibilityProf. DevelopmentLifelong LearningServiceGoing Above & BeyondLeadershipTaking InitiativeCourse DetailsART 127 – GRAPHIC SYMBOLISMGraphic symbolism is a studio course addressing the study of signs andsymbols used for branding and logo design.The major student outcomes are: 1) learninghow to look at and analyze historical symbolsand contemporary logos in the context ofinterface design; 2) learning how to examine thecreative process of creating simplified abstractsymbols; and 3) learning how to design logosand symbols using a combination of basic designelements, such as line, shape, value, color,texture, time, space, motion, and basic designprinciples, such as balance, rhythm, emphasis,contrast, variation, repetition, and unity.I taught this course in the fall of 2005. I used avariety of teaching techniques to meet the courseobjectives. I began each class with ananticipatory set of logo examples and introducedlesson themes during the group conversation. Iconducted a series of technical lessons on howto design simple symbols using Adobe Illustrator,the industry standard graphics application forlogo design. I also assigned many readings onthe topic of semiotics, the study of signs andsymbols and their meanings. I felt that this classwas a great success. Students enjoyed learninghow to speak about design in a pseudocorporate environment while learning thetechnical skills required to design quality logosand symbols.Student Work from Art 127 – Graphic SymbolismThe above images are screenshots of the final project where students go through the full design process to design client logos. Notethe New Media Arts logo, designed by Shawn Tamura. This logo was selected to become the official New Media Arts program logoand has been used in many of our marketing materials, prior to the UH system no longer allowing programs to have their own logo.Teaching section page 26
