LEADERSHIPTAKING INITIATIVE AND LEADING BY EXAMPLESummary of Leadership EndeavorsOver the past four years, I have grown to become a leader within theNew Media Arts Program. I am currently the program coordinator,responsible for handling all program-related administrative duties. I takegreat pride in being the spokesperson for our program.During the academic year of 2008-2009, Iserved as co-coordinator of the New Media Artsprogram along with Teri Durland, the New MediaArts academic counselor. That year served as atransitional year to the current year, 2009-2010,where I am serving as the sole programcoordinator. Being a discipline coordinatorrequires leadership skills that enable a programto operate efficiently, meet student needs, andimprove over time. It requires strongorganizational skills, good communication, andthe ability to implement important changes thatimpact all students and faculty.I also led several initiatives that are noncoordinatorspecific and require leadership. Oneexample is being the chairperson of a subcommitteeresponsible for redesigning the NMAinterface design curriculum. Another example isGlow Bug, a team of faculty and students that Iput together to enter the 2008 UH Business PlanCompetition. I have also mentored severalfaculty members on their career goals and howto be successful at KCC.My colleague, Ailed Garcia, wrote in her letterof support, “Chris is a team player who’sknowledge, flexibility, and collegial spirit, helpshim to serve as an excellent leader, resource andmentor to faculty.” Please read her full letterwithin the Miscellaneous Letters & Documentssection of the appendix.New Media Arts CoordinatorBeing the coordinator for the New Media Arts program includes dutiesthat go above and beyond a typical discipline coordinator’s responsibilities.The New Media Arts program is a highlyspecialized program that requires diligentoversight by the NMA coordinator that oftenentails many long hours of hard work. Within theNMA Leadership appendix section you will find asample detailed hour log of the time that I spentconducting NMA coordinator-related dutiesduring the fall of 2008. During that semester, inmy capacity as NMA co-coordinator, I logged atotal of 256 hours. The average time spent permonth was 51.2 hours. The majority of my timeas coordinator was spent attending meetings,writing emails, writing grant proposals, andwriting program related reports.Leadership section page 76

As coordinator, Ischedule the monthly meetings, write upagendas, take meeting minutes, and share thisinformation with all NMA faculty (please see asample email in the NMA Leadership section ofthe appendix). I also maintain and organize allNMA digital documentation via a Laulima worksite that I created. I set up this work site as acentral repository for all NMA faculty to haveaccess to NMA related documentation and tocontribute to it on a continual basis. Prior toLaulima, I created a special NMA FacultyResources web page on our NMA web serverthat contained all of this content. Please see theNMA Leadership section of the appendix forscreenshots of these two resources that Icreated.NMA has three computer labs that requiremonitoring and specialized equipment upgrades.We have a full time lab manager and an annualbudget for equipment, software, and payroll forstudent workers to monitor the open lab periodsfor students. As the coordinator, I am responsiblefor overseeing our full-time lab manager to makesure that the budget is spent wisely, equipment iswell maintained, and all open labs are runproperly.One of the most important responsibilities ofthe NMA coordinator in past years, is to secureexternal funding via grant writing to ensure thatthe students have the required hardware andsoftware necessary to enter the fields ofanimation and interface design. Over the pastfour years, I have written several grant proposalsand reports. Every year we typically apply for agrant from the Pacific Center for AdvancedTechnical Training (PCATT), a large-scalefederal Perkins grant, and several smaller minigrantswhen available. Please see the NMALeadership appendix section for a samplePCATT and Perkins grant proposal that Iauthored. We have also received funding fromTitle III and other sources that require specialattention (for an example, please see the NMALeadership section of the appendix and refer tothe Kopiko 202 maps that I drafted for the Title IIIrenovations project).For each grant proposal that we submit,research is required for the technology andequipment requested. Over the past four years, Ihave contributed equipment lists for several grantbudgets (please see the NMA Leadershipappendix section for two samples).The NMA coordinator often needs to interfacewith many different organizations, both publicand private, by collaborating on several differentinitiatives. During my time as coordinator, Iattended several meetings on behalf of theprogram with organizations such as the StateDepartment of Education (DOE), the StateDepartment of Business, EconomicDevelopment and Tourism (DBEDT), severallocal high schools, many local companies, andvarious KCC and UH departments interested inpartnerships with NMA or our students.
