It appears to show random transmissionsoccurring over 180-300 MHz. Are they related or not? There are distinct characteristicsthat may help us to decide. Firstly, each transmission is of the same duration.Also, their strength is roughly the same (normalised). No two overlap in time. Theyare also in the NATO UHF air band, which supports frequency hopping systems. Allof this suggests that the transmissions are related and that they belong to the samefrequency hopping system.Now that we have looked at how a signal can be displayed, it is worth looking at atypical modern system's performance.17.2.2 Detection CapabilitySpecially designed ES detection receivers have different design considerations tothose of communications receivers. These include:• the ability to cover wide frequency ranges;• the ability to rapidly scan for signals;• signal analysis capability;• user-defined configuration of search characteristics, including the ability to searchfor pre-selected channels and signal types;• ability to analyse a wide range of signals coveri ng different signal bandwidths;• ability to detect many multiple signals simultaneously;• signal and noise averaging capabilities.Such receivers can usually record and playback detected signals and often they canbe combined with other systems to provide inputs to intercept systems and via DFantennas and processing equipment, to assist in localisati on.
