The use of Spectrum ManagementOrganisations (SMOs) Implies that the system used is not the traditIOnal 'command and control' method.or regionally. For example, an SMO may be in given responsibility for nationalTV broadcasts, for managing outside broadcast assignments or for managingtaxi communications. The spectrum management task is to make best use of the spectrum on behalf of thestakeholders. One of the principal tasks is to ensure that authorised spectrum users areprotected from interference from other spectrum users. This is achieved via a numberof mechanisms:• Allocations that limit the potential co-existence of different services that mayinterfere with each other. This is an administrative method that provides spectralseparation.• Allotments designed for specific services or operators. This again is an administrativeprocess providing spectrum separation between dissimilar systems and betweenservices offered by different network operators.
