the k<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>in</strong>formation that supervisors should seek from their <strong>in</strong>stitutions.The HKMA will take account of this framework <strong>in</strong> further develop<strong>in</strong>g thereport<strong>in</strong>g regime <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong.Second, banks and securities companies are be<strong>in</strong>g encouraged to expand theamount of public disclosure which they make about their overall <strong>in</strong>volvement<strong>in</strong> the derivatives market and trad<strong>in</strong>g, the impact of these activities onprofitability and their performance <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g the risks. If provided <strong>with</strong>mean<strong>in</strong>gful <strong>in</strong>formation, the market should be able to exert its own discipl<strong>in</strong>eon <strong>in</strong>stitutions to manage their derivatives bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> a prudent fashion. Ifso, this should complement the efforts of the supervisors. In Hong Kong,the <strong>in</strong>formation published <strong>by</strong> banks <strong>in</strong> their annual reports about their<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> derivatives and trad<strong>in</strong>g activities has <strong>in</strong>creased greatly <strong>in</strong>recent years. This policy of more transparency will cont<strong>in</strong>ue.Third, central banks are try<strong>in</strong>g to obta<strong>in</strong> more statistics about activity <strong>in</strong>global derivatives markets so that they can better monitor the macroeconomicas well as the prudential aspects of this bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Hong Kong is participat<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> this exercise.About this bookAs part of our efforts to raise the level of awareness of our staff onderivatives and to keep abreast of market developments, Mr <strong>Frederic</strong> <strong>Lau</strong>,the leader of the HKMA <strong>Derivatives</strong> Team started to write a series ofarticles on the subject.
