Conceptual.Modeling<br />

The Human Semant c <strong>Web</strong><br />

Wittgenstein has demonstrated that we cannot speak about things in <strong>the</strong>ir essence<br />

(Wittgenstein, 1953). In fact, we attach names to things in order not to have to talk<br />

about whatever lies behind <strong>the</strong>se verbal interfaces to <strong>the</strong> unknown. Instead, we talk<br />

about <strong>the</strong> only things that we can talk about — <strong>the</strong> relations between <strong>the</strong> cognitive<br />

appearances <strong>of</strong> things. This fundamental fact forms <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire scientific<br />

project clearly stated by one <strong>of</strong> its most eminent proponents — Henri Poincaré<br />

(1905):<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> science is not things <strong>the</strong>mselves — as <strong>the</strong> dogmatists in <strong>the</strong>ir simplicity<br />

imagine — but <strong>the</strong> relations between things. Outside those relations <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

reality knowable. (p. xxiv)<br />

Hence, according to Poincaré, <strong>the</strong> conceptual relationships are fundamental to any<br />

linguistically based world model, because <strong>the</strong>y represent <strong>the</strong> only things that we<br />

can talk about.<br />

Introducing.<strong>the</strong>.Concept.“Concept”<br />

Concept formation helps us to disregard what is inessential by creating idealized<br />

structures that focus on what is essential. Efficient concepts disregard as much as<br />

possible in such a way that it is noticed as little as possible. 12 Classical examples <strong>of</strong><br />

efficient concepts are point, line, and plane from <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> geometry.<br />

There is a vast amount <strong>of</strong> literature on conceptual modeling. Here we will just give<br />

a brief summary <strong>of</strong> some important definitions related to <strong>the</strong> concept “concept”<br />

from <strong>the</strong> perspective <strong>of</strong> object-oriented modeling. For a more thorough discussion,<br />

<strong>the</strong> reader is referred to Odell and Martin (1998).<br />

Definitions:<br />

• A concept is a representation <strong>of</strong> something that we have experienced or that we<br />

can imagine, and which we can apply to <strong>the</strong> objects that we are aware <strong>of</strong>.<br />

• A description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important concepts and <strong>the</strong>ir relations within a<br />

specific problem domain is called a conceptual model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> domain.<br />

• The definition <strong>of</strong> a concept describes its intention (i.e., what qualities it aims<br />

to express and delimit with respect to its surroundings).<br />

• The set <strong>of</strong> objects that exemplify a concept is called its extension.<br />
