nevertheless God's truth. We willfully confess these things and, in turn, our
confession shapes our subsequent attitudes and behavior.
And here's where the obedience comes into play. Since God is creator
and Jesus is the Messiah as we confess, then it follows that we will strive to be
willfully obedient to the teachings and lordship.of Jesus Christ. We seek to know
and practice bedrock Christian values. We let our confession and our
environment influence our behavior to live our lives as a reflection of our
devotion to our Creator and our Redeemer. Imperfect as we are, we strive to live
the Christian lifestyle as an academic community and as individuals. And as the
great commandments demand, we seek to behave in such a way that we
demonstrate with our lives that we love God and we love others.
A key extension of that love is our witness. We are an evangelical
university in the sense that we affirm that the only thing that lasts for individuals
beyond their earthly journey is life in Christ. As such, " Knowledge for the
Joumey" is more than our new slogan, for within that phrase we point to both the
knowledge one needs to be successful at a career and in life, but we also point to
the never-ending journey that Christ makes available only to those who call upon
Him as Savior and Lord.
And finally, our obedience to Christ makes this a community that is
passionate about the whole idea of the integration of faith and learning. This is an
allowance rarely if ever tolerated in the modern secular university. The Christian
university is one, as Arthur Holmes suggests in his book, The Idea of A Christian
College, that acknowledges that "students need to gain a realistic look at life and
to discover for themselves the questions that confront us. They need to work their
way painfully through the maze of alternative ideas and arguments while finding
out how the Christian faith speaks to such matters." Our desire at Anderson is
that through our confession and obedience, students are influenced and
strengthened to live extraordinary lives of faith.
This year, perhaps more than ever before, we have made our students
aware that Anderson University is assertively a Christian university and we will
pursue our calling to do our best to build a campus community centered around
the teachings, the person, and the work of Jesus the Christ. That's what a Christcentered
university is . That' s what Anderson University is !
