ensure their physical, moral, emotional, and spiritual well-being, with a
goal of raising godly men and women who are thoroughly equipped to
live as fully devoted followers of Christ; and
WHEREAS, whenever the light of God's people comes into
contact with the forces of darkness which would erase a proper
understanding of morality based on God's Word, the light triumphs over
the darkness and re-establishes order (1 Kings 18:17 - 40 and Acts
16:16-19); therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that we, the messengers to the 186'nannual
meeting of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, encourage our
churches to offer classes, and other available programs such as Released
Time for Religious Education, which teach Biblical principles to our
children so that they may be able to respond to the many challenges
they receive to their faith; and be it further
RESOLVED, that parents, whether they choose to keep their
children in public school or remove them to another educational
environment, should be encouraged to be personally and actively
involved in their children's education, refusing to simply trust the
system they have chosen, but rather knowing what their children are
being taught and being willing to challenge through the proper channels
any system which denies their right to pass along their biblically-based
moral values; and be it further
RESOLVED, that parents stay informed concerning the public
policy issues which affect education in South Carolina and actively
make their voices heard in the debate about how their children are
educated; and be it further
RESOLVED, that South Carolina Baptists be encouraged to
pray for and encourage those who choose to homeschool or place their
children in private Christian schools; and be it finally
RESOLVED, that South Carolina Baptists be encouraged to
pray for and encourage all Christian parents, students, teachers, staff,
and administrators who choose to continue to be salt and light in the
public school.
The vote was taken, and the resolution was adopted.
On behalf of the committee, Kirt Mitchell presented the following
resolution on Appreciation for Dr. B. Carlisle Driggers and moved its
adoption:
WHEREAS, B. Carlisle Driggers has served the Southem
Baptist denomination faithfully for forty-eight years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Driggers has received earned and honorary
degrees from numerous institutions of higher learning and seminaries;
