What if you make that your goal, <strong>and</strong> keep it in mind? You know that the goalembraces peace, silence, tranquillity, <strong>and</strong> freedom. These are all descriptions ofNibbāna. You may not be able to describe Nibbāna in words but you can feel some ofits qualities intuitively. Sometimes you just need to rely upon that. It’s somethinginside you that knows what Enlightenment is all about. There is something inside youthat even knows what jhānas are all about, because most of you have been monks <strong>and</strong>nuns many times before. It is reminding you <strong>and</strong>, once you can bring that goal tomind, it shows you what the Dhamma truly is. It is something that the Buddha saidwas s<strong>and</strong>ihika, that which can be experienced in this very life. Not to rely on abelief of what’s going to happen in our next life but to experience it now. It’s akālika,or timeless, that’s why we don’t need to change the teachings to fit into modernWestern culture, whatever that is. The Dhamma of the Buddha, the heart of it all, isliterally timeless. It is eternal <strong>and</strong> for anybody, in any age, in any era, presentedclearly <strong>and</strong> accurately. It will always resonate with people because it’s talking aboutthe mind <strong>and</strong> the body. They might change depending on their genes, the culturemight change, but the mind, the heart, doesn’t change that much, it’s basically thesame.Essentially it’s the problem of the ‘doer’ <strong>and</strong> the ‘knower’. Once one sees this <strong>and</strong>underst<strong>and</strong>s, one underst<strong>and</strong>s why the Buddha’s teaching is so timeless. Oneunderst<strong>and</strong>s how the Dhamma reaches across twenty-five centuries, from ancientIndia – that strange culture, so different from ours – to our modern society. There issome commonality, something which strikes us, resonates with us as being important,<strong>and</strong> that’s this Dhamma quality. The meaning of the word Dhamma – as theVenerable Bhikkhu Bodhi so beautifully put it in one of his books (The GreatDiscourse on Causation published by the <strong>Buddhist</strong> Publication Society) – is lookingto the heart of the matter where everything comes from, the source, the essence, theultimate, the law, the rule behind everything. The atthā, the meaning, on the otherh<strong>and</strong> is the consequences of that Dhamma, how that Dhamma works out in the world.But here we are looking at the Dhamma, the heart, the source; this is what wisdom isabout. It is about the core, finding that wisdom given by the Buddha. The Buddhagave us a practical path to find this out, he gave instructions, <strong>and</strong> it’s always the case106
