1 WAYS AND MEANS INTO JHĀNA14 th July 1996The Buddha says in the Laukikopama Sutta, that happiness which is apart fromsensuality <strong>and</strong> pleasure, apart from unwholesome dhammas, should be pursued, that itshould be developed, that it should be cultivate, that it should not be feared. (see MN66.20 & 21)I want to take the opportunity this evening to talk to you about the process ofmeditation leading up to jhānas. Now, just over a fortnight into the Rains Retreat, isthe right time for such a talk. So much external activity has disappeared <strong>and</strong> the mind<strong>and</strong> body should have settled down. The mind should now be inclining towards quiet<strong>and</strong> peaceful states of mind. So now is the right time to talk about how one shoulddeal with this mind in order to lead it into very useful deep states of peace <strong>and</strong> bliss.Many of you have heard my talks on the subject before, so you may hear much that isrepeated. But because these talks are not pre-planned there will be information thatyou have not heard <strong>and</strong> that will be helpful to you. Anything that helps you to settlethe mind, let go of the hindrances, <strong>and</strong> let go of the world of the five senses will beuseful to you. Anything that helps you gain these ‘uttarimanussadhamma’, theseextraordinary conditions, these superior human states which are worthy of the Ariyas,will be very useful to you.The Roads to SuccessI spoke in my last talk about the need for sense-restraint <strong>and</strong> it goes without sayingthat sense-restraint gives one the groundwork, the foundation, for taking this mindinto a deeper, fuller restraint of the senses, a fuller letting go of the many, many placeswhere the mind dwells. We need to go into a deeper place inside the mind, a place ofgreat peace <strong>and</strong> bliss, a very profound place which gives you great insights into thenature of the mind. You can then see what the mind is capable of <strong>and</strong> how it feels tobe in those states. You see what those states are <strong>and</strong> how they come about.4
