can give up, especially your ideas, your thoughts, <strong>and</strong> even some of the ways that youperceive. If you can do that you are applying the contemplation of painissagga todeveloping deep meditation. After deep meditation contemplate painissagga evenfurther. You’re ab<strong>and</strong>oning all of those mental defilements: cravings, wrong views,wrong perceptions, <strong>and</strong> the wrong thoughts called the vipallāsas, the perversions ofcognition, what we call avijjā, delusion. Ab<strong>and</strong>oning your delusions you’re givingthem up, you’re allowing them to cease until there’s nothing there. If you can do thatyou can get on the path to deep insights, <strong>and</strong> you find that you can give up everythingbecause there is nothing there anyway. There’s nothing to keep, nothing worthholding on to. As the Lord Buddha said, sabbe dhammā nāla abhinivesāya (MN37), that’s beautiful. Again for those who know Pāli there is a related word nivāsa, itmeans lodging, or an abiding. I like to translate sabbe dhammā nāla abhinivesāya,as: all, everything completely, is not worth hanging out in, not worth making anabiding in, not worth making a home for the consciousness or for the ‘doer’. It’susually translated as ‘nothing is worth attaching to’, which misses most of themeaning. When you underst<strong>and</strong> the idea of nivāsa as a place where you abide, live,<strong>and</strong> create a home, <strong>and</strong> then you underst<strong>and</strong> the full meaning <strong>and</strong> you underst<strong>and</strong> whyyou can actually ab<strong>and</strong>on everything. You underst<strong>and</strong> why painissagga, theab<strong>and</strong>oning of wrong thoughts, wrong views, wrong thinking, wrong use of the mind,is a path to both jhānas <strong>and</strong> Nibbāna.ConclusionSo these are ways of using those four reflections at the end of the Ānāpānasati Sutta,anicca, virāga, Nirodha, <strong>and</strong> painissagga. When the Buddha taught those reflectionshe meant them to be done extremely deeply, extremely beautifully, very powerfully,<strong>and</strong> very wonderfully. Unless you are an Arahant never think that you underst<strong>and</strong>these words completely. That’s why it’s good to allow them to roll around in themind, allow the mind to play around with them, allow the mind to recognise them.There may have been experiences in the past, in the long distant past, when you knewthose words. They can resonate now <strong>and</strong> take you to the same territory, the territoryof the jhānas, the territory of maggaphala (The Path <strong>and</strong> Fruit), the territory of peace.So play with those words especially after a deep meditation. They can lead you intojhānas; they can lead you into complete release189
