memories of Ajahn Chah’s teaching. Ajahn Chah said, “Don’t follow the moods inyour mind. If a mood comes up don’t get involved in it. Don’t follow. Don’t build itup. Don’t get attached to it”. In other words just let it burn itself out.We might have anger, but at least we’re not going to push that wheel barrow alongand build the anger up. If we get tired, that is just bodily tired, that’s all. If we getdepressed don’t sink into that depression. It’s just a pit and it gives us so muchsuffering. Don’t get into that depression; instead put joy into the mind. Don’t believein those moods. When we believe in those moods we get attached to them; we believewe are upset. We believe we’re tired or depressed. Who is upset, who is tired andwho is depressed? Once we can actually detach from these moods they don’t occur.Once there is not an ‘I’, how can there be someone who is upset, someone who isdepressed or someone who is angry?Let Go of the Past and the FutureIn Buddhism attachment is where we identify with these states, where we make a‘self’ out of them and become them. This is how they find a foothold inside of us.We can see all these things like physical tiredness; it’s just the body, that’s all. We are never going tohave that ‘oomph’ when we get into our fifties and we’re only going to drag ourselvesaround when we are in our seventies. That’s just the nature of this body. We have toget used to it. We can’t fight it or control it. What we can do is realise that it’s justthe body being tired.Sometimes when I go back to my hut at night my body is so tired. I’ve been runningaround all day doing things for people, and then I remember that teaching of theBuddha – I have great faith in the Buddha’s teachings – ‘Even though the body issick, the mind doesn’t need to be sick. Even though the body is tired, the minddoesn’t need to be tired’. These are very powerful teachings! Teachings like theseare great, because we are often tired physically but not mentally. That is how we cancheer ourselves up. Separate the mind from the body and even though the body ishurting, we just let it go, and follow the Buddha’s teachings on meditation. Let go of74
