12 REFLECTIONS THAT ARE CONDUCIVETO LIBERATION6 th Sept. 2000Earlier this week somebody asked if I could give a talk on the four objects ofcontemplation in the Ānāpānasati Sutta (MN 118). Those things one shouldcontemplate when one has just emerged from a deep state of samādhi, a deep state ofcalm. How can one use these four reflections as taught by the Buddha to weaken thedefilements <strong>and</strong> undermine the illusions caused by the defilements? How can one usethese reflections to see the Dhamma, to release the mind. <strong>and</strong> gain the powers <strong>and</strong> thefruits of the practice?It’s my experience that whatever the Buddha said in the suttas always has a veryprofound <strong>and</strong> deep meaning. And because it’s profound <strong>and</strong> deep it has a verypowerful effect on the mind. It has in a much greater result than you anticipate. Sowhen the Buddha advised in the Ānāpānasati Sutta to contemplate these four things,they are obviously very powerful reflections. I’m sure most of you would know whatthose four reflections are. In case you have forgotten them they are anicca(impermanence), virāga (fading away, dispassion), Nirodha (cessation), <strong>and</strong>painissagga (letting go, ab<strong>and</strong>oning). You all think you know the meaning of anicca<strong>and</strong> you might think you know the meaning of virāga, Nirodha <strong>and</strong> painissagga. Butif you really knew the meaning of those things you would be able to uproot thedefilements <strong>and</strong> see non-self. You would be able to give up clinging to the wheel ofsasāra.All these words signify something. It’s only when we fully underst<strong>and</strong> what they’repointing to <strong>and</strong> completely underst<strong>and</strong> their meaning that we can say that we knowthose things. A sign that you underst<strong>and</strong> is that the mind is released <strong>and</strong> youexperience enormous peace, bliss, <strong>and</strong> a sense that something has been destroyed.Freeing the MindSo, this is much more than a mere intellectual grasp of concepts. <strong>This</strong> is theexperiencing of those concepts. It’s actually being anicca, feeling that thoroughly <strong>and</strong>176
