Pupils were encouraged to express themselvesthrough the medium of art, poetry and model building. Both my MalteseeTwinning partner and I agree that the project managed to broaden theexperiential and cultural horizons of the pupils and staff. The project successfullysupported the intercultural exchange of ideas and values and introduceda European dimension into the curriculum of both participating primary schools.The pupils were incidentally introduced to the rich cultural identity of eachother’s country.Joseph Molloy5The main benefits of this project were to improve English language acquisitionand self-expression. However, this project brought about more benefits such asbringing out the creativity hidden in the girls, empowering life-skills and decisionmakingskills, realising that Malta is not the ‘whole world’, building up selfesteemand becoming more familiar with ICT tools. Jacqueline VanhearThis project formed an electronic bridge between two island nations in the EU,one in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and the other on the edge of theAtlantic Ocean. The laughter and excitement of children dissolved internationalboundaries. The rich tapestry of accents and expressions in the podcasts andlive video conferences added to the sense of overseas adventure and culturalexchange. It is important to note that the technology was invisible to thechildren – they could only see and hear each other. They only became aware ofit when it malfunctioned and spoiled their serious fun. Begin with a clear and simple objective. Put the projectframework in place and build on it gradually. Encourage your partner(s) tocontribute their ideas and/or skills as often and as freely as possible. Be preparedto change and be open to new ideas and methodologies. And don’t forget toconsult with the pupils as they often have novel approaches to problem solvingand their imagination knows no bounds. Above all, make sure that the projectdoes not become a burden. It should be an enjoyable and enhancing experiencefor all involved.Joseph MolloyeTwinning projects are the way forward to promote constructivist teaching andto move away from ‘banking education’. eTwinning projects, although timeconsuming, put an emphasis on the process rather than the content or product.If a teacher really believes in a holistic kind of education, eTwinning projectsare one of the tools that a teacher can use in his/her classroom to bring aboutchange!Jacqueline Vanhear31
