Thewater treatment center, port authority and east coast park recreation centerare the major points of interest for the learning experience. Students willspend the mornings studying the various aspects of the environment andthe afternoons on the water learning the skills necessary to navigate variousvessels in the water.Specific water activities will include laser sailing, wakeboarding, skiing,canoeing and artificial surfing. These are activities that require elements ofmovement and fitness.Each activity is specific in the skills which must be learned and providestudents a unique opportunity to take advantage of superlative facilities inwhich to learn and demonstrate the activities.BackgroundBecause of its geographical position and size, Singapore depends onwater for an inordinate amount of its survival as an island nation. Its port isamong the busiest in the world, its rainfall provides nearly all of the watersupply for its densely populated society and the surrounding waterways alsocontribute to the country’s leisure and social activities, as well as linking it tothe surrounding countries.Our interim experience will explore all of these variables through the studyof Singapore as seen through the eyes of its most precious resource -- itswater.Objectives• Develop a high level of appreciation for the natural environment throughactual immersion in the surroundings on a day to day basis.• Perform relevant studies/tests to determine the present state of theenvironment in terms of water purity, coastal cleanliness and if possible,the quality of aquatic life in relation to the surrounding environment andthe level of sustainability.• Explore the port area to understand how it contributes to bothSingapore’s economy and the natural environment in general.• Learn about and practice some of the varied water sport activitiesavailable in Singapore including: laser sailing, wakeboarding, canoeingand controlled water surfing.RequirementsStudents will be expected to complete the following course guidelines:• Pass the pre-course swim test.• Attend all scheduled meetings.• Fulfill all academic, post IS requirements.• Participate in either parent night activity, or help develop web based ISreflection page.48 interim semester HANDBOOKSINGAPORE AMERICAN SCHOOL
