Thewater treatment center, port authority and east coast park recreation centerare the major points of interest for the learning experience. Students willspend the mornings studying the various aspects of the environment andthe afternoons on the water learning the skills necessary to navigate variousvessels in the water.Specific water activities will include laser sailing, wakeboarding, skiing,canoeing and artificial surfing. These are activities that require elements ofmovement and fitness.Each activity is specific in the skills which must be learned and providestudents a unique opportunity to take advantage of superlative facilities inwhich to learn and demonstrate the activities.BackgroundBecause of its geographical position and size, Singapore depends onwater for an inordinate amount of its survival as an island nation. Its port isamong the busiest in the world, its rainfall provides nearly all of the watersupply for its densely populated society and the surrounding waterways alsocontribute to the country’s leisure and social activities, as well as linking it tothe surrounding countries.Our interim experience will explore all of these variables through the studyof Singapore as seen through the eyes of its most precious resource -- itswater.Objectives• Develop a high level of appreciation for the natural environment throughactual immersion in the surroundings on a day to day basis.• Perform relevant studies/tests to determine the present state of theenvironment in terms of water purity, coastal cleanliness and if possible,the quality of aquatic life in relation to the surrounding environment andthe level of sustainability.• Explore the port area to understand how it contributes to bothSingapore’s economy and the natural environment in general.• Learn about and practice some of the varied water sport activitiesavailable in Singapore including: laser sailing, wakeboarding, canoeingand controlled water surfing.RequirementsStudents will be expected to complete the following course guidelines:• Pass the pre-course swim test.• Attend all scheduled meetings.• Fulfill all academic, post IS requirements.• Participate in either parent night activity, or help develop web based ISreflection page.48 interim semester HANDBOOKSINGAPORE AMERICAN SCHOOL

At its best, it can be a uniquesynthesis of technology and art. The purpose of this course is to introducestudents to the basic ideas and skills of digital photography and DSLRcamera operation, composition digital workflow processing and imageediting using Photoshop. During the week, students will participate inseveral day courses/guided field shoots to local Singaporean cultural sitesand document the experience “through the lens”.Students will be expected to demonstrate the skills mentioned above bymaking a PowerPoint photo essay for Parent Night. The results of theseessays will be processed, printed and compiled into a portfolio by eachparticipant.Post-Interim Experience:Parent’s night / OnlineReflectionsObjectivesThe objective of this course is to learn more about Singaporean cultureand history while also providing students with an opportunity to learn thebasic skills of DSLR camera operation, basic photographic compositiontechniques and image editing possibilities using Photoshop. Students willexit this one week course with the necessary skills to:• Handle a camera and understand the fundamentals of photography,including shutter speed, aperture, metering and ISO.• Demonstrate and discuss what makes a “good image” in aestheticterms (i.e. framing, depth of field, rule of thirds, patterns, etc.). Studentswill critique each other’s work and have their own work critiqued by aprofessional photographer.• Learn how to shoot “in the field” through guided field courses.• Approach photography with thematic sense or as a story-teller.• Image editing using PhotoShop, printing and exhibiting the finalproduct.RequirementsPre-Course requirements:• Students need to provide their own digital SLR cameras includingmanual override functions.• Students must attend all scheduled meetings.Post-Course requirements:• Students must attend all scheduled meetings.• Several students will be asked to take a leadership role in organizing ourfinal digital presentation.SINGAPORE AMERICAN SCHOOL interim semester HANDBOOK 49
