Mr . Saabye was so busy with his ownaffairs that, for practical purposes, one can say he ceased to actas American consul at Copenhagen. Mr . Isaackson, at Christiansand,continued to earn American praise, but he was, afterall, a Dane, and so far away from Copenhagen that he hadlittle effect on the course of Danish policy.Th e government of the United States had long since know nof Danish maritime aggression, but the only action our governmenttook in 1809 was to send John M . Forbes, United Statesconsul at Hamburg, up to Copenhagen to see what he could dothere. Being only a consul, and not even a consul to a Danishport, he accomplished little or nothing and returned to Ham ­burg in March, 1810, after an unrewarding winter in Copenhagen.36During the last month or so of the winter, Forbes wasassisted at Copenhagen by the man who inherited his mantle asthe nearest thing to a properly accredited diplomatic representativeof the United States in Denmark.
