Those twowere swift dispatch schooners, built and rigged for speed, notapplebowed merchantmen built for spaciousness and rigged forslow dependability. Th e average stranded American merchantmen could never hope to elude British cruisers in the Baltic.The underwriters of Boston, who certainly knew the odds,demanded 30 to 40 per cent to insure the voyage of a merchantman hom e from Russia. 31Som e of these stranded American ships were sold for a pittanceto local merchants. The exquisitely misnamed "GoldenAge" ended that way. 32 Others possibly were hired by localinterests and sailed under the protection of foreign flags. 33Some just sat where they were and didn't venture out to seauntil the end of the war.Th e plight of the crews of the ships that were exiled for theduration of the war was not a happy one. The officers of theships could afford to pay for passage to the United States, andmany of them did.
