The day of 25 March 1813 was set aside for a festivalto "solemnize the glorious and important events the Almightyhas vouchsafed to bring to pass in Russia." Th e celebrationbegan at King's Chapel, where the crowded pews were regaledwith prayers, recitations, choruses—the Hallelujah Choruswas particularly well received—and a discourse by the ReverendDr. James Freeman. (Freeman was a member of theYankee clergy wh o were so pro-Russian that Cobbett, theBritish journalist, called them the "Cossack Priesthood." 43 )Dr. Freeman's address was woven all of Biblical passages, thewhole being an analogy to the history of the United States andEurope since 1790 or so. In it the Federalist presidents, Wash ington and John Adams , rated together as "King Solomon,"and the Republican presidents, Jefferson and Madison, ratedtogether as a "bramble bush." In aflurryof Biblical quotations,Freeman next moved to Europe and managed to haveNapoleon—"the King of the South"—invade the realm ofTsar Alexander—"the King of the North"—who, with thehelp of "the destroying angel," drove the invader off and defeatedhim. Freeman ended with "Sing hallelujah! for the LordGo d Omnipotent reigneth," and burst into tears. At four in the afternoon, the subscribers to the festival andtheir guests assembled in the Exchange Coffee House.
