InReval, Adams met Diedrich Rodde, the American vice-consulthere by appointment of Levett Harris. Rodde complained toAdam s that he and his brother had been treated badly byHarris, so badly, in fact, that Rodde told Adams all he couldabout Harris' peculations, even though in making the revelationhe put himself in a bad light, too.Diedrich Rodde said that he and his brother, who wasAmerican vice-consul at Riga, also by appointment of Harris,had agreed to pay Harris pensions of one thousand and fivethousand rubles a year, respectively, plus half the profits theymade on American vessels and cargoes. In return, they hadreceived their appointments as consuls. Th e Roddes' currenttrouble with Harris stemmed from the fact that, although therehad been no American business to do in either Reval or Riga ini8i2or 1813, and although the Rodde properties in Riga hadbeen destroyed during the defense of that city against theFrench, Harris demanded his pensions.276
