There is no way on earth that I would havehanded it in with a missing button.”“I can only judge matters based upon thelaundry supervisor’s report,” said Katie. “According tothe paperwork the button was missing when theytook custody of it. You’re due for a dusting.”Claire continued to gape at Katie.Katie Beck was settling Claire in over her kneeswhen Mr Humphries stepped into her office.“Not so fast, Katie. Let her up. There’ssomething I’d like to talk to you about,” he told her.The Grand Master reviewed Katie’s applicationto slipper Claire. Slippering of members of the Elitefor clobber abuse was rare but not totallyunprecedented. Katie had listed half a dozen previousinstances of prefects being dusted for variouscontraventions of the Politics of Clobber. Thepaperwork was meticulous and the case seemed bonafide. Under the circumstances the Grand Master feltobliged to endorse the application.The Grand Master was drinking his morningcoffee and smoking a cigarette. He idly clicked hismouse on the electronic punishment record databaseon the GalGab web-site. He went to a pull downmenu and filtered down to the number of inmateswho had recently been slippered by Katie for handingin blouses in a state similar to the one she had justshown him. He sipped his coffee thoughtfully andthen picked up his cell-phone.
