55“Oh shit,” growled the Bounder. “I’ll offer you3-1 on a fiver that little temper tantrum just cost uswhops.” A few minutes later the door handle turnedand Claire Brooks came in accompanied by PattyHodge.Claire was peeved to find Patty prowling thelandings. It had been several weeks since thecontroversial confrontation that had resulted in theDeputy Grand Dame being dangled by Lady Vix. Eversince then Patty had been giving the Dorm Raider awide berth.“Just a routine check-up,” said Pattydefensively when Claire glared at her. “I won’t get inyour way.” Claire just grunted and set off on herrounds. She couldn’t help noticing that Patty hadchanged out of her signature high-heels and waspadding about the landings in rubber-soled plimsolls.Claire was on the stairs leading between thePhase 4 and Phase 5 landings when she heard thesqueal. She sighed.“I recognize that voice,” said Pattyimmediately. “I’d know that voice anywhere. Thatwas Miss Sutton.”Claire rolled her eyes and stepped onto thelanding.Claire took off her blazer. The irony of thesituation was not lost on her. It had been her refusalto beat Bernadette and Lisa that had sparked the rowbetween her and Patty. Things at Woodys had astrange way of coming around in a full circle.
The WoodettesLisa was bent across the end of her bedwaiting to be caned. She heard a whistle and thesharp crack of ashplant as it collided withBernadette’s upturned behind. She was seething. Shewas mad at the Bounder for provoking her and madat herself for rank foolishness.In the earlier phases of their Extreme SocialRehabilitation programs the inmates slept in longopen-plan dormitories. It was common practice forthe dorm-mates to indulge in games of Dare, bettingeach other who would risk their jimjams by goofing orgabbing. On several occasions while she was sleepingin the dorms Lisa had learned how uncomfortable itcould be trying to get some quality shuteye with yourbackside glowing like a police beacon.Now that they were in Phase 5 of theirsentences Lisa and Bernadette had moved into amore comfortable two bed study. Without elevenother inmates to provoke them there wasconsiderably less temptation to indulge in the type offoolishness that was likely to attract the attention ofthe Dorm Raider.Lisa heard Claire crossing the room and grittedher teeth. She felt the ashplant tapping down andgripped the duvet tightly in her fists. She heard awhistle from above and then all hell broke loose inher jimjams.
