Pathfinder Orange Book Version 2.2.44 The international timetabling processIn order to use Pathfinder correctly and appropriately, it is essential to have a clear understanding ofthe international timetabling process. Please note the relevant description of processes (CustomerHandbook for processes for international timetabling) on the RNE websitehttp://www.railneteurope.com/cont/products_timetabling.aspx and on the Pathfinder systemhttps://www.pfndr.org/pathfinder/process_description_en.pdf . Timetabling handbook and processdescription contain sufficient information about how the international timetabling process isimplemented and utilized in Pathfinder.5 Start-up5.1 Starting positionDuring the start-up phase of Pathfinder, procedures must be established for agreeing paths betweenusers of Pathfinder and conventional companies. Since 2006 the usage of Pathfinder is free ofcharge. Furthermore all RNE Members committed that Pathfinder should be used as the tool forcoordinating international paths.The procedure proposed here therefore represents an interim solution, which will becomesuperfluous over the next few years.A conflict of media, such as is almost inevitable in any transitional period, increases the costfor all participants and reduces standards and efficiency. The aim is therefore to replace thisprocedure as soon as possible by one based purely on Pathfinder.A universal path agreement process in Pathfinder is only of any use if the lead-manager for a path isa user of Pathfinder.Companies involved in a path who do not use Pathfinder can be assigned to the Dossier. Thesecompanies are identified in the Inbox with a grey symbol.5.2 ProcedureDossiers in Pathfinder can be exported in various ways and then processed on the workplacecomputer in question. These ways are:1. XML for further processing in individual computer applications2. PDF as the format for documentation, printing and archiving3. HMTL as the dynamic format for exchanging with a view to further processing in MicrosoftEXCELThe lead manager (RU and IM) exports the Pathfinder Dossier as an HTML document. This HTMLDossier is constructed in a similar way to the Dossier template within Pathfinder. The document canbe opened and edited using Microsoft EXCEL (from Version 2000). The lead manager sends theHTML Dossier by email to those companies which are involved in the agreement process but do notuse Pathfinder. These companies enter their information in the EXCEL file. It should be noted thataccess rights are overridden. That is to say, in the EXCEL file all data can be changed. To avoid anymisunderstandings, the following rules apply:5.2.1 Validity ruleFor Pathfinder users, only the data in Pathfinder is valid.For all other users, only the data in the EXCEL file is valid.Any data transfers are for information only and are not binding.5.2.2 Data transport within PathfinderThe “external” path data is loaded by the lead manager in to the Dossier on the Pathfinder serveras EXCEL or HTML files. The file extension should be “*.xml”. Pathfinder treats this external dataas an attachment to the Dossier. All users of Pathfinder have access to this information. The datais viewed and edited in EXCEL, and the Microsoft Internet browser can be configured so thatEXCEL starts automatically as soon as a link to an EXCEL file is selected.December 2010 Page 37 of 133
