160CHAPTER 5 ■ SHAREPOINT CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENTwith WSS supports the ability to create XML data sources that you can use <strong>in</strong> your web pages.This capability allows you to connect directly with SQL databases, XML files, <strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> lists,and other sources to display dynamic data sets of <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> tabular formats. Us<strong>in</strong>g the<strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> Designer, you can display this data without ever writ<strong>in</strong>g code.The key to us<strong>in</strong>g dynamic data sets <strong>in</strong> your web pages is to make use of the Data SourceLibrary and the Data View web part. The Data Source Library acts as an agent for mapp<strong>in</strong>gaccess to any number of data sources that can provide XML data sets. The Data View web partis the component that displays those data sets on the page.When the Data View web part is display<strong>in</strong>g an XML data set, it has the ability to format thedata set based on the eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transform (XSLT). This means that youcan use the <strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> Designer editor to format columns, colors, and styles for a data set. Youcan also use a conditional format to change the style of a data cell when it reaches certa<strong>in</strong>parameters. In this way, you can call attention to outly<strong>in</strong>g data <strong>in</strong> the set.Us<strong>in</strong>g XML data sets beg<strong>in</strong>s with the Data Source Library. You can access the Data SourceLibrary by select<strong>in</strong>g Data View ➤ Insert Data View from the ma<strong>in</strong> menu <strong>in</strong> the <strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>Designer. The library lists all of the available XML data sources. If you have an exist<strong>in</strong>g Share-Po<strong>in</strong>t site open <strong>in</strong> the <strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> Designer, you’ll notice that all of the lists and libraries <strong>in</strong> thesite are available for use as data sources. In addition to these sources, you’ll also see supportfor database connections, XML files, server-side scripts, web services, and the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess DataCatalog. Figure 5-7 shows an example of the Data Source Library.Figure 5-7. The Data Source LibraryWhen us<strong>in</strong>g the Data Source Library, you are not limited to the lists and libraries associatedwith the site that is currently open. You can either create new lists and libraries directlyor utilize lists and libraries from other sites with<strong>in</strong> the portal structure. If you click either theCreate New <strong>SharePo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> List or the Create New Document Library l<strong>in</strong>k, you will open a dialogthat allows you to add a new list, library, or survey to the Data Source Library.
