The AfterProperties contain thevalues that the item will have after the event is complete. You can also access BeforePropertiesthat have the field values that exist before the event runs. Using the before and after propertiesto get and set information is used extensively in event programming.Another common programming task is to stop the deletion of an item. This is accomplishedby setting the Cancel property to true. You can also see that in Listing 7-10, I set theErrorMessage property. The error message will be displayed on a full page if someone tries todelete an item.Creating the Manifest FileWhen you create an event receiver, you’ll need to create a Feature.xml file in the same way asI have presented throughout this chapter. Once you have createdthe Feature.xml file, manifest, and assembly, you can deploy them just like any other feature.Figure 7-4 shows an example of the feature in use.

The “Internal Use” FeatureBuilding and Using WorkflowsOne of the major new functional additions to SharePoint is its support for workflow. Moreexactly, SharePoint supports a particular implementation of human workflow. A human workflowis one that requires the interaction of a person to move from step to step. If a document isrouted serially to three people, for example, it cannot go to the second person until the firstone has completed a review. This stands in contrast to system workflow, which can executea series of operations without human interaction.The implementation of human workflow in SharePoint is actually quite simplistic. ASharePoint workflow interacts with humans by assigning tasks and waiting. When the task ismarked as completed, the workflow continues to the next step. Therefore, a SharePoint workflowwill always have a task list associated with it. Figure 7-5 shows a typical task assignmentassociated with a workflow.Figure 7-5.
