They are accepted by the American Board of Prosthodontics and as such are a necessary teachingtool in prosthodontic training programs and dental school curricula. They are meant to emphasize theimportance of the Prosthodontic Diagnostic Index in teaching, in diagnosis, and treatment planning forthe prosthodontist and general practitioner, and are to be used in patient presentations and lectures.They also provide guidelines for daily use in communication with dental insurance companies and inthe evaluation of the procedural requirements of the standard of care. This document provides thefoundation of the concept that prosthodontics is a specialty based on diagnosis of degree of difficultyinstead of individual tooth technique.
