Thedark lines represent the action and thoughts<strong>of</strong> the singer to counteract the witchcraft.Since there are two thoughts or actions, twoprayers are used against the witchcraft. Tothe north are two dark lines. In case there istrouble and the first prayer does not work,"14" is used to supplement the ceremony. All<strong>of</strong> this is done while all the prayers are beingsaid.The good people and the good singers likethese ceremonies, one and two, for they destroyevil.Plate III 25This ceremony is something like the onewith Thunder (Ceremony I), but the Bearis prayed to here.1. Bear. This is the bear, "All <strong>of</strong> the Bear."2. Mountain. This is the mountain byFort Defiance, c'osgai — white spruce — theChuska Ran^e. This where the War Twinsspent the night with the bear. Afterwards theTwins said, "This will be used in future times,"i.e., the information gained while with thebear.3. Sun.4. East. This line represents the east, wherethe Sun comes up. "Under, toward the east,a Black Bear lying. I need your protection."5. Witch.6. Power. This is the power <strong>of</strong> the witchand what he thinks.7. Connecting the witch. This line is fromthe witch: "As he cries."8. Suffering. "The witch as he suffers."9. Dying. The witch dies, ". . . and as hefinally dies because <strong>of</strong> the power <strong>of</strong> this ceremony."There are many verses to this ceremonyas the witch suffers, cries, and finallydies.10. Gifts. These are the gifts <strong>of</strong> the whiteshell, turquoise, oyster shell and jet given tothe Bear, Big Snake, Thunder and the Wind,for their help and power. Blue pollen 26 isalso given, so as to not let the witchcraft takeplace.1 1 The First Twin or the Second Twin.26This chantway is unrecognized, but it is not apart <strong>of</strong> the Blessing Way.This represents the First or Second Twin,with lightning and flint from his head, shoulders,hand, knee and foot. As you pray to theBear, you say, "I am the First War Twin,etc." As you pray to the Big Snake, you say,"I am the Second War Twin." Praying to theThunder, you say, "I am the First War Twin,"and praying to the Wind you say, "I am theSecond War Twin."12. Singer. This shows the singer actingas the War Twin, shooting lightning: "Protection<strong>of</strong> lightning and flint around me."13. Colors <strong>of</strong> Bears. These are the fourcolors <strong>of</strong> bears: black, gray (blue), yellow andwhite.14. These four represent the four lightnings.The flint, added to these which theTwin has, makes five stanzas in all.15. Big Snake. This is the Big Snake <strong>of</strong>four colors.16. Home. This is where the Snake lives.a. Cliff. This is a cliff or- rock wall.b. Singer. This is the singer.17. Thunder. This is the Thunder <strong>of</strong> fourcolors.18. Clouds. These are Clouds where theThunder s^oes for protection from witchcraft.The Thunder and the Clouds always go together.19. Wind. This is the Wind <strong>of</strong> the fourcolors.Plate IV: Blessing Way.Sometimes a person will learn too much orgain too much power. He may get stiff whenhe is beincj sung over or when he is hearingstories. He may get anxious or worry overstories and thus get sick. When this happens,this ceremony is held.1. Talking God. On his head are "live"eagle feathers.2. Black Mountain. This is Pelado Peak, tothe east.3. Corn Pollen. Inside the mountain is cornpollen.4. Doorway to Mountain. This is the trailor doorway <strong>of</strong> the mountain. The mountainis like a hogan and one can go in or out.
