Izcture XVVEDANTA AND SANNYASINSIr ts only the ignorant and faithless, who are followers ofthe philosophy of flesh, carp and say, "The Sannyasins wholead the path of renunciation or Nivrittimarga are idlers. Theyare of no use to the society. They are like drone bees. Theysimply waste their time in forests, caves and hills, there isnothing in Vedanta. It is the philosophy of dreamers only.There is no need for the order of Sannyasa. Where isBrahman? Can you show your Brahman? If there is really oneSat-Chit-Ananda Brahman, will He not shine now and here?There is no such thing as Brahman. Brahman is only animaginary phantom of the so-called Vedantins. There is no usein renunciation, Tapas and control of the senses. kt us eat anddrink and rejoice in this world. There is nothing beyond thesesenses. There is nothing beyond this world. There is nothingbeyond sensual pleasures." This is a beautiful and soul-stiningphilosophy indeed! This is the sublime philosophy ofCharvakas, materialists, epicureans, gluttons, followers ofVirochana and worshippers of flesh and body. The followersof this school are countless in this world.Every religion has a band of anchorites who lead the life.ofseclusion and meditation. There are Bhikshris in Buddhism,Fakirs in Mohammedanism, Sufistic-Fakirs in Sufism, Fathersand Reverends in Christianity. The glory of a religion will beabsolutely lost, if you remove these hermits or Sannyasins orthose who lead a life of renunciation and divinecontemplation. It is these people who maintain and preservethe religions of the world. It is these people who give solace tothe householders when they are in trouble and distress. Theyare the harbingers of divine wisdom and peace. They are the148 LECTURES ON YOGA AND VEDANTA
messengers of Atmic knowledge and heavenly messages.They are the disseminators of Adhyatmic science andUpanishadic revelations. They tend the sick, comfort theforlorn and nurse the bed-ridden. They bring hope to thehopeless, joy to the depressed, strength to the weak, andcourage to the timid by imparting the knowledge of Vedantaand the significance of 'Tat Tvam Asi'Mahavakya.Vedanta is that bold philosophy which teaches unity of lifeor oneness or consciousness. It is that supreme philosophywhich boldly proclaims, with emphasis and force, that thislittle Jiva or human being is identical with the Eternal or theAbsolute. It is that sublime philosophy which elevates themind at cince to magnanimous heights of Brahmanhood,divine splendour and glory which makes a man absolutelyfearless, which destroys all barriers that separate man fromman and which brings concord, unruffIed peace and harmonyto the suffering humanity at large. It is the only philosophythat can really unite on the basis of one common Self in all, aHindu and a Mohammedan, a Catholic and a Protestant, anIrishman and an Englishman, a Jain and a Parsi, on a commonplatform and in the core of their hearts also. It is the onlyphilosophy that, when properly understood and practised, canput a definite stop to the world wars and all sorts ofdissensions, splits and skirmishes that exist in different nationsand communities. All philosophers should bow down theirheads, with implicit obedience and perfect submissiveness,before this grand philosophy. Sankara, Dattatreya,Yajnavalkya and others preached and expounded this uniquephilosophy. Rama Tirtha and Vivekananda also preached thisprofound philosophy in America.Bratrman cannot be demonstrated. He is beyond the reachof mind and speech. He cannot be seen by these physical eyesbut He can be reached through meditation, through the eye ofintuition, by one who has purified himself and who isVEDANTA AND SANNYASINS 149
